TowerMaster

A game studio for the Sega Master System

TowerMaster is a visual studio for building real Sega Master System games. Design scenes, paint tilemaps, place characters and pick behaviors — TowerMaster compiles it all into a genuine .sms ROM and runs it instantly in its built-in emulator.

The problem it solves

Making a game for 8-bit hardware traditionally means hand-writing Z80 assembly and fighting strict video and memory limits. TowerMaster removes that barrier: you focus on the game, and it produces hardware-accurate ROMs that run in any emulator or on a real console via a flash cart.

What it does

Visual scene editor

Multi-screen scrolling scenes, tilemap painting, entity placement and doors between scenes, with undo and redo.

Behaviors in C#

Write entity behaviors in a simple C# subset; TowerMaster compiles them to compact bytecode run by a hand-optimized Z80 engine.

Built-in emulator

A full Master System emulator — Z80, video, PSG and FM sound — is part of the studio. Press Build & Run and play immediately.

Sprite import and animation

Turn any image into a hardware-legal sprite with automatic color reduction, then animate it with directional walk cycles or loops.

Combat and game logic

Teams, health, projectiles and persistent variables shared across scenes give you the building blocks for real gameplay.

Genuine ROMs

The output is a real .sms ROM that runs in any Master System emulator or on original hardware via a flash cart.

Who it's for

  • Indie and hobbyist game designers who love retro consoles
  • Homebrew developers who want to skip hand-written assembly
  • Educators teaching game design and how computers work
  • Retro fans who want to see their own game on real hardware

Frequently asked questions

What is TowerMaster?

TowerMaster is a game-making IDE for the Sega Master System. You design your game visually — scenes, tiles, sprites and behaviors — and it compiles a real SMS ROM you can play in the built-in emulator or on original hardware.

Do I need to know Z80 assembly to make a game?

No. You paint tilemaps, place entities and wire doors between scenes in a visual editor, with no code required. For custom behaviors you can write a small, restricted subset of C#, which TowerMaster compiles into bytecode run by its Z80 engine.

Will the games run on a real Master System?

Yes. TowerMaster exports a bootable .sms ROM that runs on actual hardware via a flash cart and in accurate emulators. It can also generate a printable instruction manual and cartridge and box art for a physical release.

How do I install it, and what does it cost?

TowerMaster is a free, MIT-licensed Windows desktop app. Install it with winget install Silvatower.TowerMaster, or download the latest release, unzip it anywhere and run TowerMaster.exe — it is portable, with no installer.
